Charlan was establi shed in 1992 by Charmaine and Alan Rogers. They started out with a Piper Seneca II, ZS-MFP, but soon found that the demand for their services far exceeded its capacity. So shortly thereafter they added a pressurised, twin turbine Cessna Conquest I to their fleet, which arrived in South Africa in March 1994. This was upgraded to a Cessna Conquest II in 1996. As the market demand increased it soon became apparent that an aircraft with bigger capacity was going to be needed. In April1999 the first Metro III, a lightweight version, was delivered to South Africa. This became the first Metro III to land in South Africa. This 19-seater was used for charter operations and proved so successful that two more Metro III’s (heavy), these being the more powerful variants with far better performance, were acquired in very short order. This saw the arrival of ZS-OMV in December of 1999 and ZS-CAC in August 2000.
