The Central Bank of Lesotho has launched a fifth Maloti limited Edition coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence.

The launch comes ahead of the main celebrations on the October 4.

Preparations are underway for Lesotho’s 50th independence celebrations and the limited edition coin specially minted.

Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho Dr Retselisitsoe Matlanyane says, “I now declare the 50th anniversary 2016 commemorative fifth Maloti coin officially launched.”

The coin has the face of His Majesty King Letsie III, the year 2016 with the basotho hat, and the number five on the one side and the coats of arms the words Independence anniversary, the number 50th centred by wheat leaves on the other.

Matlanyane says, “It will be circulated by commercial Banks on October 3, and it will be available in Lesotho and Southern border towns that accept the Loti.”

The road to Independence includes public lectures and a week of arts and music concerts.

In August the King officiated the start of torch relay to mark the official beginning to independence celebrations; that torch is still going around the country.

Official celebrations will be on October 4.
