Air Burundi is the national flag carrier of Burundi and has its headquarters in Bujumbura. It is wholly owned by the government of Burundi.

In April 1975 air Burundi was created with a decree № 1/99.

The company was made a public company on the 5th of December 1997 under the supervision of the ministry of transport and aeronautics.

In the month of January 1989 air Burundi fell under the authority of the ministry of national defense and was further moved to the ministry of post and telecommunication on the 5th of March 1994.

In September 1997 a harmonization process of air Burundi began, which is in accordance with the code of public and private companies.

Throughout its history of transition air Burundi initially started with three aircrafts types from the Dakota type, twin otter and also the Beech Craft type of aircraft.

Of late the government of Burundi has partnered with the Chinese government and has acquired the MA60 type aircraft, which is a 52 seater turbo prop with a two type seating configuration, business and economy class thus improving its fleet size and also giving it the potential to expand its wings into the sub-Saharan African region.
